"Do I need a coach or a therapist?" is a fair question, and the honest answer depends on what you want help with. Here is a simple way to think about it.

What a life coach does

A life coach helps you move forward on goals: confidence at work, decisions, routines, habits, or feeling stuck. Coaching looks mostly at the present and the future. Sessions are practical, with clear actions between them. Life coaching is not a regulated profession in Australia, so check training, experience and how a coach works before you book. NLP coaching is one style of coaching with practical tools for self-talk and reactions. See NLP coaching explained.

What a therapist does

"Therapist" is a broad word. In Australia it usually means a psychologist, who is registered with AHPRA, or a counsellor or psychotherapist, who may belong to a body such as ACA or PACFA. Therapists can work with mental health conditions, trauma, grief and deeper patterns. Psychologists can assess and treat diagnosed conditions, and with a GP mental health plan some sessions may attract a Medicare rebate.

Style Practical, forward looking Supportive, talking based Structured, evidence based therapy

A simple way to choose

  • Start with your GP or a psychologist if you have ongoing low mood, panic attacks, trauma, thoughts of self-harm, or anything that makes daily life hard.
  • A counsellor can help with a tough season: a breakup, grief, family stress.
  • A coach suits you if you are generally okay but want to change something specific, such as confidence, a habit, or nerves before speaking.

You can also use more than one. Plenty of people see a psychologist and work with a coach on a practical goal. Just let both know.

Where hypnotherapy fits

Hypnotherapy sits close to coaching. It is complementary wellbeing support for everyday stress, habits and confidence, using a relaxed, focused state to rehearse new responses. It is not a treatment for mental health conditions. Read hypnotherapy vs CBT and counselling for a closer look.

At Neuro Reset Studio, NLP coaching and hypnotherapy are offered together in short programs, in person in Berwick or online. See NLP and life coaching in Melbourne.

Frequently asked questions

Is a life coach cheaper than a therapist?

Prices vary a lot for both. Coaching is not Medicare rebated, while some psychology sessions can be with a GP plan. Compare the total cost of a short program, not just one session.

Can a life coach help with anxiety?

A coach can help with everyday stress and worry habits using practical tools. Diagnosed anxiety, panic attacks or symptoms that affect daily life are best taken to your GP or a psychologist first.

How do I know if a coach is any good?

Ask about their training, how sessions run, what happens between sessions, and what they do if coaching is not the right fit. A good coach will tell you honestly when another kind of support would suit you better.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

Many people start with a short series of 3 or 4 sessions. See how many hypnotherapy sessions do you need? for how programs are set up.
