People often ask whether they should see a hypnotherapist, a counsellor or a psychologist. They are different things, and they can work well together.
CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy)
CBT is a structured psychological therapy. It helps you notice links between thoughts, feelings and behaviour and practise new ways of responding. In Australia it is commonly delivered by psychologists and other registered health professionals, and it has a strong research base for anxiety and depression. Your GP can talk you through referral options.
Counselling
Counselling is a talking-based support for life difficulties, relationships, grief and stress. Counsellors in Australia are not all registered under AHPRA, so check memberships such as ACA or PACFA.
Hypnotherapy and NLP coaching
Hypnotherapy uses a relaxed, focused state to rehearse new responses and work with habits and feelings. NLP coaching gives practical tools for self-talk and reactions. At Neuro Reset Studio these are offered as complementary wellbeing support. They are not a treatment for mental health conditions and are not covered by Medicare.
A quick comparison
| CBT | Counselling | Hypnotherapy and NLP coaching | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main method | Structured thinking and behaviour work | Talking and support | Relaxed focus, rehearsal, coaching tools |
| Usual provider | Psychologist | Counsellor | Hypnotherapist or coach |
| Best for | Diagnosed anxiety or depression | Life stress, grief, relationships | Everyday stress, habits, confidence |
Can I do both?
Yes. Many people see a psychologist and use hypnotherapy or coaching for extra support with a habit or performance nerves. Please tell both practitioners.
