Real confidence isn't something you can fake until you make it. Praise and achievements give a short lift, but steadier confidence comes from the relationship you have with yourself.

Where self-doubt comes from

Low confidence often grows from beliefs formed early in life or after a hard experience: "I'm not good enough", "I'll be judged", "I shouldn't take up space". These beliefs run on autopilot. They shape your self-talk, your body language and the chances you take, often before you notice.

Common signs

  • Comparing yourself to others all the time
  • Brushing off compliments
  • Holding back in meetings, interviews or social settings
  • Pulling back just as things start to go well
  • A loud inner critic

Three NLP exercises to try this week

  1. Notice the voice. When your inner critic speaks, notice the tone and where it seems to come from. Imagine it slower, quieter or in a silly cartoon voice. Many people find this takes the sting out.
  2. Anchor a confident state. Remember a time you felt capable. Step into it fully: what you saw, heard and felt. At the peak, press your thumb and finger together. Repeat a few times a day.
  3. Rehearse the moment. Before a presentation or interview, picture it going well from start to finish, including handling a hiccup calmly.

How hypnotherapy can support confidence

Hypnotherapy for confidence and self-esteem uses a relaxed, focused state to rehearse feeling steady in situations you find hard, and to soften old beliefs. People often combine it with NLP and coaching for practical next steps. Results vary from person to person, and practice between sessions matters.

When to get more support

If low self-esteem comes with ongoing low mood or anxiety, please talk to your GP or a psychologist as well.
