Hypnotherapy for sleep is about helping your mind and body shift from "alert" to "rest" at bedtime. It uses deep relaxation, calm focus and rehearsal of a settled night, often with practice at home between sessions. It can support better sleep habits and a quieter mind at night. It is not a treatment for sleep disorders, and nobody can promise you a set number of hours.
If your main problem is a racing mind once the lights go off, start with our guide to sleep and overthinking. This article explains how hypnotherapy fits in.
What the research says
The honest answer is: promising, but mixed. A 2018 systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine looked at 24 studies of hypnosis for sleep. Just over half reported a benefit on at least one sleep measure, and side effects were rare. But study quality varied a lot, and the more rigorous trials were less likely to find a benefit.
For long-term insomnia, the approach with the strongest evidence is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which your GP can help you access. Hypnotherapy can sit alongside that kind of care as relaxation and habit support. It does not replace it.
What hypnotherapy for sleep can help with
People usually come to us with one or more of these:
- A busy mind at bedtime, replaying the day or planning tomorrow
- Feeling wired but tired, where the body stays on alert after a stressful day
- Bedtime habits that keep sleep later than you want, such as scrolling in bed
- Worry about sleep itself, where the fear of a bad night makes it harder to drift off
- Waking in the early hours and finding it hard to settle again
What it is not for: sleep apnoea, heavy snoring with pauses in breathing, restless legs, sleep problems caused by medication or pain, or chronic insomnia that has not been checked by a GP.
What a session looks like
Every person is different, but a sleep focused session with us usually follows this shape.
- A clear conversation. We talk about your nights: when you go to bed, what keeps you awake, what you have tried and what a good night would look like for you.
- Deep relaxation. You are guided into a calm, focused state. You stay aware and in control the whole time. More on this in what happens in a hypnotherapy session.
- Rehearsing a settled night. In that calm state you practise letting thoughts pass, softening the body and linking your bed with rest rather than effort.
- Practice at home. Most of the change comes from practice between sessions. Many people use a relaxation recording as they wind down.
- Simple daytime steps. We agree one or two small changes, such as a steady wake time or screens away earlier.
Sessions are online across Australia or in person in Berwick. Online works well for sleep, because you practise in your own home. See is online hypnotherapy effective?
Things that help alongside hypnotherapy
- Keep a steady wake time, even after a poor night. It is one of the most useful anchors for your body clock.
- Use a wind-down routine. Dim lights, a warm shower, the same calming steps each night.
- Get up if you cannot sleep after about 20 minutes. Do something quiet in low light and return when sleepy.
- Write a worry list earlier in the evening, with one next step for each item.
- Try long out-breaths. Breathe in for 4, out for 6 to 8. Our nervous system regulation techniques have more ideas.
When to see your GP first
Please see your GP if poor sleep has lasted more than a few weeks, you snore heavily or someone notices you stop breathing at night, you feel very sleepy during the day or while driving, or low mood or anxiety are affecting your days. The Sleep Health Foundation has reliable Australian information on sleep problems. Hypnotherapy is complementary support and works best alongside medical care where it is needed.
How many sessions and what it costs
Many people work on sleep as part of our Anxiety and Overthinking Reset, which is $510 for 3 sessions and includes sleep and wind-down practices. Your first session is free, so you can check whether the approach suits you before you commit. Full prices are in our hypnotherapy cost guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does hypnotherapy work for sleep?
Research is promising but mixed. A 2018 review of 24 studies found just over half reported some benefit on sleep, though study quality varied. Many people find it helpful for a busy mind and bedtime habits. We cannot promise a particular result.
Can hypnotherapy help with insomnia?
It can support relaxation and better sleep habits. Long-term insomnia should be checked by your GP, and CBT-I has the strongest evidence. Hypnotherapy can sit alongside that.
Will I fall asleep during the session?
Some people drift close to sleep, and that is fine. You stay aware enough to hear the voice and come back when the session ends.
Can I just listen to a sleep hypnosis app?
Apps and recordings can be a good start. A personal session lets us focus on what keeps you awake for you, rather than a general script for everyone.
Is hypnotherapy for sleep available online?
Yes. Sessions run online across Australia, or in person in Berwick, Melbourne.
