Replaying a conversation for the tenth time. Running every "what if" before making a small decision. Overthinking can make simple days feel heavy.
Why the mind gets stuck
Overthinking is often the mind trying to keep you safe by solving every possible problem in advance. The trouble is that worry feels like problem solving but rarely reaches an answer. When you are stressed or tired, the loop gets stronger. If you have found it hard to switch off at bedtime, see our guide to sleep and overthinking.
Simple tools for the daytime
- Name it. Saying "I am overthinking" gives you a little distance from the thoughts.
- Problem or worry? If there is a next step, write it down and do it. If not, it is a worry, and you can let it sit without solving it.
- Set a worry window. 15 minutes a day to write worries down. Outside that time, gently postpone them.
- Move your body. A short walk changes your state faster than arguing with a thought.
- Ground through the senses. Notice 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
How hypnotherapy and NLP can support you
Hypnotherapy guides you into a relaxed, focused state where many people find it easier to notice thoughts without being pulled along. Sessions can include rehearsing calm responses to usual triggers. NLP tools help you notice the pictures and self-talk that keep a loop going and practise new ways of responding.
This is support for calmer habits of mind. It is not a quick fix, and it does not replace care from your GP or psychologist.
When to get more help
If worry is constant, affects your work, sleep or relationships, or comes with low mood, please talk to your GP. They can discuss options including a mental health plan with a psychologist.
Our Anxiety and Overthinking Reset is designed for worry loops and overwhelm, in person in Berwick or online.
Frequently asked questions
Can hypnotherapy help with overthinking?
Many people find hypnotherapy helps them feel more relaxed and better able to step out of thought loops. Results vary and no outcome is promised.
Is overthinking the same as anxiety?
They often go together, but not always. If you are unsure, your GP is a good first step.
