Thinking about hypnotherapy to quit smoking or vaping? Here is what it involves and what to realistically expect.
How hypnotherapy can support quitting
Smoking and vaping are partly a physical addiction and partly a habit loop: coffee, the drive home, stress, a break at work. Hypnotherapy focuses on the habit and feeling side. In sessions we:
- map your triggers and the "reward" each cigarette or vape gives you
- rehearse a different response to each trigger in a relaxed, focused state
- strengthen your own reasons for quitting
- plan for the hard moments, such as stressful days or social events
Honest expectations
Some people find hypnotherapy a useful support, and some quit after a few sessions. Others need more support or several attempts, and that is normal. The research is mixed. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees you will quit in one session.
Use it alongside other supports
You are more likely to succeed with several supports together:
- Quitline: 13 78 48, free coaching
- Your GP or pharmacist: about nicotine replacement or medicines
- Apps such as My QuitBuddy
Tell your GP you are quitting, especially if you take regular medicines.
