If your child is worried, stuck in a habit or losing confidence, you have probably wondered whether something like hypnotherapy could help. Here is what parents usually want to know.
Is hypnotherapy suitable for children and teens?
Children and teens often find guided relaxation and imagination easy, because they use their imagination every day. For many young people, sessions feel more like a calm, guided story than anything strange. It is a gentle, complementary approach, and it works best when your child is at least curious about it.
It is not a replacement for a GP, paediatrician, psychologist or school counsellor. If your child has a diagnosed condition or you are worried about their mental health, please start there.
Common reasons families come in
- Worry and big feelings. Learning simple ways to settle the body and name what is going on.
- Exam and performance nerves. Feeling steadier before tests, sport or music. See our calm guide to exam stress for parents.
- Screens and gaming. Building healthier routines without daily battles. See screen time and gaming in teens.
- Small habits. Nail biting, hair twirling and similar habits. See why small habits stick.
- Confidence. Speaking up in class, making friends, trying new things.
- Bedtime routines. A calmer wind-down when their mind is busy at night.
What a session looks like for a young person
- A relaxed chat first. What is going on, what they would like to feel instead, what they enjoy.
- A short guided relaxation. Often using a favourite place, a story or breathing, in age-appropriate language.
- Practising a new response. For example, imagining walking into the exam room feeling steady.
- A simple tool to take home. A breathing pattern, a calm word or a short recording.
Your child stays aware and in control the whole time. They can open their eyes or stop whenever they like.
How parents are involved
Parent or guardian involvement is required for children and teens at Neuro Reset Studio. You give consent, you are part of the first conversation, and you are kept informed. For younger children a parent usually stays in the room. Teens often like some time on their own, and we agree together what is shared so they feel safe and you feel included.
You can also help a lot at home: practising the tool together, keeping routines steady and noticing small wins.
Questions to ask any practitioner
- What training do you have, and do you work with young people regularly?
- How do you involve parents, and what do you share with us?
- How many sessions do you usually suggest, and how far apart?
- When would you suggest we see a GP or psychologist instead?
Frequently asked questions
What age can children start hypnotherapy?
It depends on the child and the goal. Many practitioners work with primary school children using simple, playful language, and with teens in a more grown-up way. We will talk about whether it suits your child in the first session.
Will my child be asleep?
No. Your child will feel relaxed but stay awake and aware. Many kids say it feels like daydreaming.
Can sessions be online?
Yes, many teens are comfortable online at home. Younger children usually do better in person in Berwick, with a parent close by.
How many sessions will they need?
Often a short series of 3 or 4 sessions, a week or two apart, with practice at home. The Screen Habit Reset is 4 sessions and the Confidence and Performance Reset is 3. Results vary from child to child.
