If you are thinking about hypnotherapy for the first time, it is sensible to ask whether it is safe. Here is a plain answer.
The short answer
For most people, yes. Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state, a bit like being absorbed in a good book or a long drive. You stay aware, you can hear everything, and you can open your eyes and stop at any time. Some people feel a little tired or emotional afterwards, which usually passes quickly.
Common myths
- "I will lose control." You will not. You cannot be made to say or do anything you do not want to.
- "I might get stuck in hypnosis." You cannot get stuck. If the session stopped, you would simply drift back to normal awareness, or fall asleep and wake up.
- "It is like stage hypnosis." Stage shows are entertainment, with volunteers who choose to play along. A session is calm, private and led by your goals.
- "Only weak-minded people can be hypnotised." Being able to focus and relax is a skill, not a weakness.
Who it may not suit
Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach, not medical or psychological treatment. Please talk to your GP or treating psychologist before booking if you:
- have a diagnosed mental health condition, especially psychosis, bipolar disorder or a dissociative condition
- are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself (call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency)
- have epilepsy or another condition where deep relaxation is a concern
- are under the influence of alcohol or drugs on the day
If something is outside what we can safely help with, we will say so and suggest who to speak with.
What a careful practitioner does
- Asks about your health and goals before starting
- Explains each step and checks you are comfortable
- Never promises a result
- Keeps your information private
- Works with a parent or guardian for anyone under 18
- Encourages you to keep seeing your GP or other health professionals

Frequently asked questions
Can hypnotherapy be harmful?
For most people it is a gentle, relaxing experience. Some people may feel tired or emotional afterwards. If you have a mental health condition, check with your GP or psychologist first.
Will I remember the session?
Most people remember most or all of it. Some feel so relaxed that parts are a little hazy, like after a nap.
Can I be hypnotised against my will?
No. Hypnosis needs your willingness and focus. You stay in control the whole time.
Is hypnotherapy safe for teenagers?
It can be, with a parent or guardian involved and the teen comfortable to take part. See hypnotherapy and support for teens.
